HMRC Connection

How to connect
to HMRC

A step-by-step guide to linking your Government Gateway account to File MTD ITSA using HMRC’s secure OAuth 2.0 authorisation. The whole journey usually takes under five minutes.

Connection steps

From a new account to a live HMRC link — here is the flow you will follow inside File MTD ITSA.

01

Create your File MTD ITSA account and choose the plan that fits how you want to file (self-serve or with accountant support).

02

Open Connect

From the Maintain area, tap Connect to HMRC (wording may say “Connect to HMRC Gateway”) to start the official OAuth journey.

03

Government Gateway

You are redirected to HMRC’s own site. Sign in with your Government Gateway user ID and password — we never see those credentials.

04

Authorise

Review the permissions and grant File MTD ITSA authority to submit MTD updates on your behalf. You can revoke this anytime from HMRC.

Ready to connect?

Open an account, go to Maintain, and link HMRC in a single sitting — most people finish in under five minutes.

HMRC setup — FAQ

Quick answers about connecting to HMRC.

Do you store my HMRC Gateway password?
Never. We use HMRC OAuth 2.0 — you sign in on HMRC only. We keep an encrypted access token so the app can file when you request it.
How long does connection take?
Usually about five to ten minutes including account setup, Maintain, and the HMRC consent screen.
What if my connection drops?
Tokens are refreshed when possible. If one expires, use Reconnect on the Maintain page — the same authorisation flow applies.
Can I use sandbox and production?
Yes. Use sandbox to practise; switch to production for real submissions. Your administrator controls which endpoint is active.
What do I need before I start?
A Government Gateway account, your NINO and UTR, and MTD ITSA enrolment where HMRC requires it.
Is this the same as Self Assessment online?
MTD ITSA replaces the old annual-only SA process for businesses in scope: you send quarterly digital updates and a year-end declaration. Connecting here authorises our software to use HMRC’s MTD APIs on your behalf.
